When I came on board at Birch Aquarium at Scripps, there was no in-house designer, photographer or videographer. Over the past 6 years, I’ve gotten to explore filming our animals, events and beyond.

OBJECTIVE
We pride ourself on sneaky learning. Our guests to come see some cool fish, animals and beyond — but also walk out with new nuggets of information that they can use in their everyday lives. From fish facts to conservation to recycling.

Myself and the social media manager worked closely on several of these projects.

Little Blue Penguin Launch Teaser Videos (july 2022)

We kicked off the opening festivities with a day of media and community previews followed by the official opening for members. We worked with the Mayor of San Diego to not only attend the ribbon cutting, but also to proclaim July 12 Little Blue Penguin Day in the City of San Diego.

That same day, we released this video to give our guests a little taste of what to expect in the exhibit. We filmed various feedings, shots of the exhibit without guests allowed in and the little blues exploring the exhibit for the first time.

Our last push heading into opening was the release of our construction timelapse video, which became our most watched video of all time. In addition to traditional timelapse footage, the team cut in key milestones, which really made the video standout. So much work went into the construction and transformation of the space, we wanted our guests to get a glimpse of the incredible amount of work and love that went into creating a home for our #LittleBlues! The social media manager, myself and our marketing student all took turns filming major milestones of the construction and comliied it not only monthly for our website updates, but once the whole project wrapped up.


Goal: Create awareness for our little blue penguins on penguin awareness day, January 20.

Part of keeping buzz going is tying into trending topics. One success we had tying into trends was the filming of a “Penguin Parade” that we released both on social media, and to our local TV stations for Penguin Awareness Day. Again, lots of great social media engagement as well as TV News and blog pickup.

This was the first time we showed a group of penguins and people loved it!

Goal: Get our guests excited and create awareness.

We worked with The San Diego Union-Tribune, which is our main local paper, on an exclusive story and timed our announcement with that article going live.

This introduced the exhibit to the public and officially started our journey building buzz within the community. In addition to the press release, we kicked off a series of fun, engaging (and downright cute) social media posts including this video.


A project that looks so easy, but never is. We started this project by reaching out to all the department leads for their best number based stats for the year. We compiled a 3 page google doc of major milestones, but whittled it down to this short video. Video was shared on all social platforms as well as in an e-blast to members.


Our Loggerhead Sea Turtle underwent a structured blue light 3D scan! Working with our socia media manager, husbandry team and more - we capture a little behind-the-scenes look at what this technology can do.

Dabbling a little bit more into video with this summer camp promo — I compiled photos and videos from the previous year and interviewed one of the leads to create a visually fun teaser that showcases our summer camps.


2019 PIER WALKS
Still learning to dabble in video, we interviewed the lead public programs manager about what guests could expect at upcoming exclusive pier walks.

TODDLER TIME TEASER
Our guests get hands-on with interactive beginner painting exploration using paint brushes and stamps with author and artist Spramani Elaun. It was an art experience that uses earth-friendly art supplies and participants will take home their art. Toddler Time is a fun and engaging event for our littlest guests.

GREEN FLASH CONCERT SERIES
A teaser video showcase some of the incredible moments guests would get to experience during its 14th season, the Green Flash concert series combines live music with panoramic ocean views on the aquarium's stunning Tide-Pool Plaza.
